It definitely helps to spread skills and build connections. Hacker spaces are also great. Before COVID the @chapter_netherlands visited these kind of places among others. I can recommend it, maybe you could steal some of the ideas from our site.
This is the one we often visit in Amsterdam:
Every gathering of several housing units (based on proximity) sould have access to a fab-lab along with tools library to enable simple repairs and local production of as much as possible. This would also serve as a local culture and tech hub, promote innovation, cooperation and forge new friendships by frequent eposure.
This of course works as long as people care. I’ve witnessed two of such initiatives fall just because of lack of interest and people putting convenience above all else.
