Why You Should Be Worried About Chinese Surveillance | System Error

These are interesting times. Democracies around the world are in decline. States like China are on the rise. And with China’s influence and power in the world this trend is likely to increase. We should not give into fear and elect people into power that advocate a surveillance state. We should advocate sensible privacy regulations and moderate reactions to crises like terrorism.

It’s easy to setup a surveillance infrastructure. But once it’s there it won’t go away that easily. You might trust your current government with it, but what about 10-20 years from now? So we shouldn’t take these decisions lightly.

Of course the true solution would be a different socioeconomic system. An infinite growth economy on a finite planet is bound to create conflict and uncertainty, where such surveillance systems are used to “control” the situation and provide patchwork.
