It would be cool if we could have a messenger like it is described in the below link. It would merge forum and group chat features into one. And hopefully, when such an app is made, it’s hopefully built on an open-standard. Just like email. You can use any client you want. Which is great, being locked-in an app (Whatsapp/Signal/Telegram) is not great. Because you become too dependent on one organization. When they are sold to e.g. Facebook, then you have to start all over again.
The only open-standard messenger platform I know is Matrix, with many different clients.
